Script changers

As a trainer and consultant, I am committed to changing the script by working within a strength based methodology rather than more traditional deficit based approaches.

Is your organisation prepared for a critical incident such as a natural disaster?

Responsibility

Health

& Safety

The recent Health and Safety Legislation changes in New Zealand (Health and Safety at Work Act 2015) have provided a legislative framework which specifically highlights the responsibility that we all have for our health and safety in the work place. Fully understanding hazards and risks in the work place is a core premise and there is now a requirement to ensure that ‘reasonably practicable’ steps to safeguard the work place are put into place.

In the context of ‘social hazards’, such as work related-stress and working long hours; Responsive Consulting consider ‘health and safety’ and ‘well-being’ to be two sides of the same coin. Identifying and quantifying these hazards is complex and there is a danger of inaccurately estimating these risks due to the role of emotion and unconscious bias. Once identified supporting the individual, team and organisational resilience to manage these facilitates a pro-active health and safety culture.

Similarly the understanding, estimation and management of risk are considered the other side of the resilience coin. There are some events that are more predictable than others and work place stress is a common reaction to change. Indeed, events such as natural disasters have emphasised the power and impact of resilience. Therefore pro-actively building resilience alongside risk management facilitates the successful sustainability of an organisation.

Testimonials

"The Auckland branch of the New Zealand Institute of Safety Management (NZISM) was very fortunate to be able to host Samantha Patel at our meeting last week. Samantha is a forensic psychologist who has a background working in corrections with prisoners. She specialises in resilience. She now works with organisations helping them increase the resilience of their staff.  It was an eye opening presentation which helped to clarify the connection between staff wellbeing and individual safety behaviour.  Thank you Samantha for a wonderful presentation"
